How many times can we leave something behind before we begin to lose ourselves too?

A life is marked by separation — from family, home, friendships, the people and places that once made them feel they belonged, and eventually, from themself.

Inspired by the historical backdrop of Singapore’s separation from Malaysia in 1965, The Bird That Could Not Land: Between Two Shores brings the personal and the historical into conversation.

 

Through theatre, movement, choral performance and visual storytelling, the work explores identity, memory, belonging, resilience and the difficult act of moving forward.

Created through research, lived experience and collaborative devising, the production asks how separation continues to echo through families, friendships, communities — and within ourselves.

Perhaps moving forward is not always about learning how to leave.
Perhaps, sometimes, it is about finally finding somewhere to land.
